Lakewold is in Lakewood, beside Gravelly Lake. Treat it as a garden visit in its own right rather than a Tacoma stop you will somehow squeeze into the drive home. The estate combines formal and natural settings across ten acres, and the point is to notice how moving a short distance changes what you see.

The garden's history gives credit to Eulalie Wagner's long involvement and to landscape architect Thomas Church, who began advising here in 1958. Wagner donated the estate to a nonprofit in 1987; it opened to the public in 1989. That transition from private garden to public visit is worth thinking about as you walk: a place designed around one household now accommodates many people's afternoon.

## Try looking back

Our suggestion is to stop after a turn and look toward where you came from. Compare how a view is framed in each direction, then find a place where you would want to sit. You do not need to identify every plant to have an opinion about a garden. “I would like to stay here” is a perfectly respectable piece of landscape criticism.

The house has hosted music as well. Lakewold's Music From Home archive records a December 2023 performance of Shawn Okpebholo's *Unknown* by mezzo-soprano Myah Rose Paden and pianist Ricardo de la Torre. Check for a newly announced concert if you want to experience Wagner House that way; the series page currently asks visitors to await dates.

## October is not an ordinary admission month

As checked October 11, 2026, the garden's homepage announces closures for All Hallows on October 17–18 and 24–25. Its booking page says general admission does not cover festival weekends. Check both before buying. The ticket form's initial $0 total is not a free-admission offer.
