North Proctor Street was Jefferson Street until 1909. That year the city renamed it for John Proctor, a local architect who had designed the county courthouse, Historic Tacoma says.

The neighborhood started in 1890, when developer Allen C. Mason platted the land between Puget Gulch and Point Defiance Park and built a streetcar line from downtown out to the park. In 1899 the line was rerouted to run up North 26th to Proctor.
