In April 1982, people in Tacoma signed the last beam of the Tacoma Dome's roof before it was lifted into place. The Dome says their names are still up there, about 150 feet above the floor.

The roof took 1.6 million board feet of wood and is 530 feet across. When it was finished, it was the largest wooden dome in the world. The Dome's own history page notes that the record "only lasted a few years."

## The site

The site was the Hawthorne neighborhood. After voters approved the bonds in 1980, the city picked Hawthorne, moved some of its houses, one of them by water, and bought and tore down others.

## Now

The City of Tacoma owns it. The Dome calls itself the largest indoor venue in Washington, set up for anywhere from 1,000 to 21,000 people, and it books concerts and touring shows.
