Why go

It’s free, it’s outdoors, and it turns the darkest weeks of the year into a reason to walk downtown after dinner.

What happens

Light art installations spread along a walkable route downtown, from illuminated sculptures to projections. Last winter’s edition had about 50 installations, nightly hours of 5 to 9pm, and a New Year’s Eve kickoff at Tollefson Plaza with a dragon parade, fire dancing and cultural performances.

Good to know

The 2026–27 trail runs December 31 through January 17. The organizers haven’t posted this year’s nightly hours, map or New Year’s Eve program yet, and workshops leading up to it start in November. Check tacomalighttrail.org closer to the date.
