Farmers market, good coffee, a few shops worth wandering into, and maybe a movie or a game of bowling. All without moving your car.

There’s a particular kind of Saturday when you want to get out of the house but don’t want to spend half the day driving between places.

Proctor is good for that.

Four or five blocks of shops, restaurants, an old movie theater, and a farmers market that runs well into December. You can make a morning of it, stretch it into the afternoon, or call it quits after coffee and a pastry.

Here’s a loose plan. No need to follow it religiously.

9:30 AM — Start at the farmers market

Proctor Farmers’ Market · N 27th & N Proctor St

The farmers market is the best reason to come on a Saturday. It takes over North 27th Street with produce, baked goods, flowers, cheese, meat, and whatever happens to be in season.

In November, don’t expect the abundance of summer berries and tomatoes. This is more the season for apples, squash, potatoes, and things you can turn into dinner when you get home.

You don’t have to buy groceries to enjoy it, either. Grab something warm to eat, look around, and see what’s there. The vendors change, so there’s usually something different.

Good to know: The market runs Saturdays from 9 AM to 2 PM through December 19, 2026. In January through March 2027, it switches to select Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM.

10:15 AM — Coffee, then the shops

Olympia Coffee · 2601 N Proctor St

Head back toward North 26th and stop at Olympia Coffee.

This is a good place to decide what kind of Saturday you’re having. Staying for another couple of hours? Grab a coffee and keep walking. Already feeling done? Nobody’s checking attendance.

If you’re sticking around, there are two shops worth a look.

Teaching Toys and Books at 2624 N Proctor has been around since 1981. It’s packed with games, puzzles, books, and toys that don’t require batteries or a subscription. Good for browsing with kids, and especially dangerous if somebody has a birthday coming up.

A little farther east along North 26th, Compass Rose at 3815 N 26th is good for gifts, cards, housewares, and things you didn’t know you wanted until you picked them up.

You don’t need to turn this into a shopping trip. Half the fun is looking.

11:30 AM — Lunch, or something close enough

Waffle Stop · 2710 N Proctor St

If everybody’s hungry, Waffle Stop is right by the market. It’s a sit-down breakfast and lunch place, so this is the stop for waffles, eggs, and a proper meal.

It can be a popular brunch destination, so check the waitlist before committing. It’s open until 3 PM.

Alternatively, grab something from the market and skip the restaurant altogether.

With kids, that might be the easier choice. Sitting down for another meal after an hour of shopping isn’t always the winning move.

Noon — An optional detour for the kids

Wheelock Library · 3722 N 26th St

If the weather’s turned miserable, or the kids need a break from stores, Wheelock Library is just off the main shopping stretch.

It’s free, it’s indoors, and nobody expects you to buy anything.

Browse the children’s books, check whether there’s an activity happening, or sit down for a bit. The library is open Saturdays from 10 AM to 6 PM.

This is also a perfectly respectable place to end the outing.

1 PM — One more thing, if you’ve got the energy

At this point, you’ve got two choices.

Option A: Go bowling.

Chalet Bowl at 3806 N 26th has been knocking down pins since 1941. It’s a small, family-run, 12-lane alley, not one of those giant entertainment complexes with flashing screens everywhere.

Saturday open bowling starts at 1 PM. As of October 2026, an hour costs $30 for one or two bowlers or $42 for three to five, plus $5.50 per person for shoes.

Book ahead. Chalet Bowl specifically discourages Saturday walk-ins without reservations.

Option B: Catch a movie.

The Blue Mouse Theatre at 2611 N Proctor has been showing movies since 1923. It’s a single-screen neighborhood theater with an old-school marquee and a rotating schedule of movies and special screenings.

Don’t count on a Saturday matinee without checking first. See what’s playing, and work your afternoon around that if something catches your eye.

Or skip both options and go home. Three hours of wandering around is a perfectly good Saturday.

The 90-minute version

Don’t have half a day?

Start at the market around 10 AM. Get coffee at Olympia Coffee, pop into Teaching Toys or one other shop, and head home.

That’s it. No reservations, no tickets, no elaborate plan.

A few things worth knowing

Parking: Street parking is available around the district, but Saturday market mornings can make the central blocks busy. Try the nearby side streets if the main strip is full. Read the signs for time limits, especially if you’re planning to stay for bowling or a movie.

With kids: The market, Teaching Toys, and Wheelock Library make a good combination without spending much. Bowling is the more expensive add-on, and you’ll want to reserve a lane.

If it’s raining: The market is outdoors, so bring a rain jacket. The coffee shops, stores, and library give you places to duck inside, but this isn’t an entirely indoor outing.

If you’re watching your budget: Browsing the market, shops, and library doesn’t cost anything. Coffee, food, and bowling are up to you.

Best time to arrive: Around 9:30 or 10 AM. You’ll catch the market with plenty of time left and the shops as they open.

Proctor isn’t a place where you need an itinerary packed with attractions. That’s kind of the appeal.

Park the car, walk around, buy a pastry, look at some books, and maybe stay longer than you planned.

Not a bad way to spend a Saturday.
