Tacoma Museums: Which One Should You Visit?

Glassblowing, art, cars or maritime history: compare four Tacoma museums by what you do there, opening days and admission before buying tickets.

If you’ve got one afternoon in Tacoma, “do the museums” is too much. Pick the one that fits what you like: watching something get made, looking at art, cars, or the waterfront’s maritime history.

Two museums is plenty for most groups, with lunch in between.

Compare them

Museum Usual days Adult ticket Allow about
Museum of Glass Wednesday–Sunday, 10am–5pm $18 during gallery renovations 1½–2 hours
Tacoma Art Museum Thursday–Friday, 10am–8pm; Saturday–Sunday, 10am–5pm $18 1–2 hours
America’s Car Museum Thursday–Monday, 10am–5pm $24.50 2–3 hours
Foss Waterway Seaport Thursday–Sunday, 10am–4pm Free 1 hour

Holidays change things. America’s Car Museum is closed November 25–26, 2026, and TAM closes on Thanksgiving. Check the museum’s calendar before a holiday trip.

1. Museum of Glass: watch it get made

In the Museum of Glass Hot Shop, artists shape molten glass while you watch. Pick it if your group would rather see a demonstration than a room of finished pieces.

The main galleries are closed for renovations until December 12, 2026. The Hot Shop is open, with smaller exhibitions in the Grand Hall, and adult admission is $18 for now. Check the price again once the galleries reopen.

It’s at 1801 Dock Street. The last ticket is sold at 4:30pm, which doesn’t leave much time.

2. Tacoma Art Museum: the galleries

Tacoma Art Museum, at 1701 Pacific Avenue, is for looking at art. Pick an exhibition from the current program rather than trying to cover the whole building.

Adult admission is $18. Two adults at both TAM and Museum of Glass spend $72 before parking or lunch. If that’s too much for one afternoon, pick one, or go on a free evening.

3. America’s Car Museum: the cars

America’s Car Museum is at 2702 East D Street, by the Tacoma Dome. Pick something to compare as you go: seats, windows, trunk space, or how much of the car is hood.

Adult tickets are $24.50, and parking is included. The cars on display change, so don’t count on one you saw in an old photo. It’s a drive from the Pacific Avenue museums.

4. Foss Waterway Seaport: the free one

Foss Waterway Seaport, at 705 Dock Street, has maritime exhibits and a heritage boat shop on the water. It’s free, and an hour is about right.

Free nights

TAM is free Thursdays, 5 to 8pm. Museum of Glass is free on third Thursdays, 5 to 8pm. The Seaport is free during regular hours and stays open until 8pm on third Thursdays.

If the free nights don’t fit your dates, pick one paid museum and spend the rest of the afternoon walking. For a younger kid who wants to play, try the Children’s Museum instead.
