Museum of Glass

Sit down in the Hot Shop and give a piece time to become something. Watching only a few seconds gets you fire. Staying longer gives you the more interesting part: a team coordinating timing, tools and decisions while the material keeps changing.

The museum says live glassblowing takes place each day it is open. Check the artist lineup, then choose a visit around work that interests you. A residency can last a day or several weeks, and some finish with a public presentation. This is a working studio with an audience, which makes repeat visits more sensible than the phrase “already done that museum” suggests.

Read this before buying admission

As checked October 11, 2026, the traditional galleries are closed for renovation. The museum says the Hot Shop, smaller exhibitions and educational programming continue. Its detailed project update anticipates reopening the galleries in December 2026; that is a projection, not a confirmed opening day. Check the update if a particular gallery is the reason for your trip. The visit page also warns that construction limits spaces in the museum garage; consult its alternative parking information before driving.

A child’s drawing can become glass

Kids Design Glass invites drawings from children 12 and under, with selected designs made by the Hot Shop team. The program began in 2004. A selected child is invited to watch and help direct the translation into glass. A drawing is an entry, not an order, and selection is not guaranteed.

This is a good prompt before a visit: draw an object you do not yet know how to make. Then watch how the glassworkers tackle shape and structure. Adults may participate in the thinking exercise; the children’s entry rules still apply.
