Things to Do in Tacoma With Kids: Pick the Kind of Day First
Hands-on play, a nature playground, glassblowing or the zoo: four Tacoma family outings with the hours, age choices and ticket math that matter.

One kid wants to build something. Another wants to run. Somebody suggested a museum, which didn’t settle anything.
Pick the kind of day first, then the place. These four Tacoma outings take different amounts of attention, money and spare clothes. Choose one.
1. Hands-on play: the Children’s Museum
The Children’s Museum of Tacoma is for open-ended, hands-on play. Plan on 90 minutes to two hours, and feel free to leave sooner.
Public hours are Friday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Mondays are for member-only and low-sensory sessions. Admission is Pay As You Will.
Strollers park in the lobby, outside the galleries, and there are free lockers for coats and bags. It’s at 1501 Pacific Avenue, Suite 202.
2. Climbing and splashing: Discovery Pond
Discovery Pond at the Tacoma Nature Center is a natural play area with a tree house, boulders, a hollow-log slide and water features. It’s for days when the kids need to move more than listen.
It’s free and open daily from 9:30am to half an hour after sunset, except when a group or party has reserved it. Check before you promise anyone the slide. Give it an hour, and pack a change of clothes.
The Nature Center is at 1919 South Tyler Street. Its indoor building keeps its own hours.
3. Watching how things work: the Hot Shop
At Museum of Glass, artists shape molten glass in front of you. Pick one piece and follow it from start to finish. Kids watch here; they don’t make glass themselves.
Give it an hour to 90 minutes. Two adults and two kids ages 6–18 cost $54 at the current rates, and kids under 6 are free. The main galleries reopen December 12, 2026, so check prices again after that.
It’s open Wednesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm, at 1801 Dock Street.
4. A longer day: Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium
The zoo takes three to four hours with breaks, and most of it is outdoors, even if the aquariums are the main event.
Two adults and two kids ages 3–12 cost $84 online or $108 at the front gate. Kids 2 and under are free. These are daytime tickets; Zoolights is a separate evening ticket.
The zoo is currently open Thursday through Monday and closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Check that day’s hours before you buy.
