The cabin in Old Town Park is a copy. The original stood for more than 120 years, most of them somewhere else.
Job Carr, a Union Army veteran, built it in 1865. The museum calls it the first non-Native permanent home in Tacoma. Carr went on to be the city’s first mayor, first postmaster, first notary public and first justice of the peace.
Where the cabin went
In 1900 it was moved to Point Defiance Park, near the Pagoda. In 1916 or 1917 (the museum’s own history gives both) it moved again, to the entrance of Five Mile Drive. In 1988, in spite of its historic status, it was taken apart for safety reasons.
The replica was dedicated as a museum on December 2, 2000.
Nearby
Chinese Reconciliation Park is down the hill on the Old Town waterfront.
