Use Waughop Lake as your first decision at Fort Steilacoom Park. The city describes a paved loop of nearly a mile, with benches and Discovery Trail signs. It is a manageable starting point inside a 340-acre park: you can complete something satisfying before deciding whether to add distance.
Bring the map, especially if your group includes a runner, a dog and somebody who only agreed to a short walk. All three can enjoy the park without needing an identical itinerary.
Read the signs near the lake
The city’s history describes the land as a source of food and a gathering place for Nisqually and Steilacoom people before settler development. Later, the property served as a farm worked by patients at Western State Hospital. That history changes how the open ground reads. Leave time for the interpretation instead of treating the barns and fields as anonymous rustic scenery.
A park can offer an easy afternoon without having a simple past. Let those facts sit beside one another.
Two very different kinds of wandering
For an uncomplicated visit, follow the lake route and pause at the signs. For a more deliberate navigation exercise, the park has a permanent orienteering course; follow the city’s link for its map and instructions. It supplies a purpose for taking the long way around, should anyone in your party require one.
Keep dogs leashed on the lake route. The separate fenced off-leash area is where the dog gets to set a less scholarly agenda.
The city listed SummerFEST here on August 15, 2026, with music, food trucks and a car show. The park also hosts the farmers market, Summer Nights at the Pavilion and Fiesta de la Familia. Consult the city calendar when deciding between an ordinary walk and a busy gathering. A large park does not guarantee that its most useful parking spaces will be available during a festival.
This is Lakewood, not a Tacoma neighborhood. Make the travel part of the plan. For a more concentrated garden outing in the same city, consider Lakewold and its separate admission rules.
