Point Defiance is where an innocent suggestion to “go to the park” requires a follow-up question. Beach? Gardens? Forest? The zoo? With 760 acres to work with, that distinction can save a substantial amount of driving around with a gradually deteriorating picnic.

Pick the outing before the entrance. For a short visit, choose the gardens near Pearl Street. For a walk with water at the end, look at Owen Beach and its connecting paths on the official map. For history, make Fort Nisqually the destination and check its separate admission and hours.

Five Mile Drive has changed its job

The outer loop is permanently closed to motor vehicles and open to pedestrians and cyclists. The inner loop still carries vehicles during park hours. Old advice to drive the whole loop will send you to a barrier. Use the current map, especially when combining stops on foot; the park’s name is not a useful measure of walking distance.

The roses have a public history

The Rose Garden dates to 1895. The park’s June 7–8, 2025 Flower & Garden Festival program paired it with guided tours led by the Tacoma Rose Society. That is a better clue to the place than a generic “beautiful gardens” description: people here know individual plants, maintain them and can explain what you are looking at. Watch for a future guided session if you want to take something home besides pictures.

The 2025 tour descriptions also flagged uneven ground. Check the route information for the particular garden or trail you choose instead of treating this enormous park as one uniform surface.

Our suggested visit: give one part of the park an unhurried hour or two. That is a planning suggestion, not an official route time. Leave Dune Peninsula for a separate waterfront walk if adding it turns a pleasant afternoon into a transport problem.
