The unexpected thing at Swan Creek is the pavement. Some upland paths follow streets from a World War II housing development, now surrounded by second-growth forest. Follow a straight stretch and think about the neighborhood that once made that line necessary. The forest has had a different idea about the place.
Below the uplands, the creek and wooded canyon offer another outing. Decide which one you want before asking a map app for directions: this park has several entrances, and arriving at “Swan Creek” does not guarantee arriving near your intended activity.
Choose your part of the park
The official map separates pedestrian canyon routes from the mountain-bike network. For an upland wander, use the Lister-area information and its dedicated map. For salmon programming, follow that event’s meeting instructions. Keep the bike map separate from your walking route; a trail designed around a rider’s momentum is an odd place for a leisurely botanical inspection.
The fish are seasonal; old event directions expire
The archived Salmon Saturdays program listed December 6 and 13, 2025, with educators and spawning-salmon viewing. It specifically opened the Pioneer Way entrance for those events during construction. That is evidence of a useful program, not permission to assume that entrance is currently available or that fish will appear on demand.
Access check, October 11, 2026: Parks Tacoma still displays a trail-closure notice referring to “early 2026,” plus a November 2025 restroom closure marked until further notice. Those stale notices do not establish reopening. Check the linked county project information and current on-site signs before committing to a canyon route; do not count on the listed restrooms.
If uncertainty would spoil the outing, Tacoma Nature Center offers another place to plan a nature walk, with its own mapped routes and different pet rules. Return here when you can choose the entrance with confidence.
