Look at Titlow Lodge and imagine two more stories above it. The building began as the Hotel Hesperides in 1911, a waterfront resort whose guests could arrive by steamer. Its upper floors disappeared during a Works Progress Administration project between 1937 and 1941. The low building you see today is the edited version.

Parks Tacoma’s history also records a separate building where chauffeurs stayed, with space for the limousines below. It is a useful correction to the idea that the waterfront’s past was uniformly rugged. Some people came to the Sound with staff.

Match the outing to the tide

The park combines lagoon, shoreline and trails, but tidepool exploration needs more than a free afternoon. The Nature Center’s Tiptoe Through the Tidepools programs have used very low tides to bring visitors and educators onto the beach; the official archive includes a July 11, 2025 session.

For a future guided outing, use its announced date, meeting point and conditions. For an independent visit, check the tide and current access information first. A low-tide photograph on a website cannot tell you what will be exposed when you arrive.

There is value in going with an educator: the benefit is learning what you are looking at and how to avoid damaging it, rather than merely being shown where to find something. Leave living things where they belong and follow posted guidance.

The lodge is not an open-house museum

The historic building serves rentals and programs. Plan to appreciate its exterior unless an event specifically offers interior access. The surrounding park still gives you an outing when the lodge is booked.

Our preferred structure for a first visit is simple: look at the lodge, take a park walk, and make the shore an optional addition that depends on conditions. If you want a second activity, check a performance at Tacoma Musical Playhouse farther east on 6th Avenue. Leave enough time to exchange beach shoes for theater manners.
